All Washington University, students are required to carry health insurance. Full-time graduate students on the Danforth Campus are automatically enrolled in (and billed for) the basic student health insurance plan unless proof of comparable coverage is provided by domestic students. International students are not eligible to waive out of the insurance plan. For details about available plans or waiving options, visit Student Health Services. (Health insurance fees are pending state approval and are subject to change.)

Cost of Attendance

The cost of attendance is a value calculated by the university, and it estimates a student's total cost to attend school in a specific academic program for an academic year. The cost of attendance includes mandatory tuition and fees plus estimated costs for living expenses. Health insurance is not included in these estimates, but it is required for all students. The estimated cost of attendance is revised annually and is meant to be used as a guide for students to make informed financial decisions regarding their enrollment.

PhD Costs

All Public Health Sciences students admitted into the Bursky School of Public Health's doctoral program receive a financial package that consists of tuition coverage and five years of stipend support.

Students are encouraged to apply for additional funding opportunities in the form of research and teaching fellowships as well as dissertation grants. Fellowship opportunities may occur as early as the first semester of satisfactory academic progress.

Our programs are full-time, and students are expected to be physically present through the first few years of the program.

Federal Financial Aid

The Department of Education (DOE) requires students to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards in order to receive federal financial aid (loans and Work-Study). To maintain SAP, students must maintain the minimum requirements for cumulative GPA and pace. Students must also complete their degree within the maximum time frame allowed for the program, as defined below:

  • The DOE SAP cumulative GPA requirement is 3.0 for a fall or spring semester. Summer semesters are not included.
  • The pace requirement for maintaining SAP requires students to earn credit for at least 67% of the credits attempted. Pace is defined as the number of credits earned divided by the number of credits attempted.

If a student does not meet either the semester DOE GPA requirement or the pace requirement, federal financial aid is cancelled for the following semester. An appeal may be submitted to the manager of student financial services and must include the following:

  • An explanation of why the SAP requirements were not achieved
  • How the student's situation has changed in order to achieve SAP requirements in the following semester

Students will be notified by the manager of Student Financial Services regarding the decision on the appeal within two weeks of the appeal submission.
