To earn a master’s degree at Washington University, a student must complete all courses required by their department; maintain satisfactory academic progress; pass certain examinations; fulfill all academic and residence requirements; and apply for program completion (graduation) via Workday Student.

Program Requirements
- Total Units Required: 30 units
- Degree Length: Three to four semesters
- Note: Students must be enrolled in 9 graduate units each semester to retain full-time status. As students complete their coursework, if enrolled in fewer than 9 graduate credits, they must enroll in a specific Arts & Sciences graduate course that will show 0 units but does count as full-time status. Students should connect with their department to ensure proper enrollment prior to the Add/Drop deadline.
Master’s Degree in Statistics for Political Science PhD Students
This program is a tailored master's degree in statistics for graduate students in Political Science. Note that, while the program is designed to serve Political Science graduate students, it is run by the Department of Statistics and Data Science. Students interested in this program will need to begin their additional coursework during their third year of study or before. Students are encouraged to apply for the program in their second year; however, they may prefer to take the additional courses first.
There are 30 units of coursework. Students may also choose an optional thesis pathway, which requires 6 additional units of thesis research, bringing the total requirement to 36 units. The minimum residence requirement is one full academic year of graduate study. A GPA of B (3.0) or better must be maintained in graduate courses. To be eligible for the thesis option, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in the first 18 units of courses satisfying the program requirements.

If an equivalent course has been taken and proficiency in the course material has been demonstrated, other 5000-level and above electives may be chosen by the student in consultation with their advisor to make up the 30 units. Typically, at most three electives shall be chosen from outside the Department of Statistics and Data Science.
Modified Course Requirements
Students must meet the core course requirements for the traditional Master of Arts in Statistics, with two exceptions:
- SDS 5130 Linear Statistical Models may be replaced with POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I and POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II. If the student opts for this substitution, POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I will be counted as a core requirement and POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II will be counted as an elective course.
- SDS 5910 Practical Training in Statistics is not required.
There are three Political Science courses that count toward this master's degree in statistics that are required of all Political Science graduate students:
- POLSCI 5103 Theories of Individual and Collective Choice II
- POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I
- POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II
Note that two of these courses will count toward the three-course limit of electives outside of SDS if SDS 5130 Linear Statistical Models is substituted with POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I and POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II.
These additional details make a total of 18 credits:
- 12 required credits from Statistics courses
- 3 credits from POLSCI 5103 Theories of Individual and Collective Choice II
- 3 additional credits from substituting POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I and POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II for SDS 5130 Linear Statistical Models
Students who do not wish to make the substitution can take SDS 5130 Linear Statistical Models and one additional SDS elective, but only with permission. The remaining 12 credits are completed through electives and an optional thesis.
Students may choose any electives acceptable for the traditional Master of Arts in Statistics. The following additional electives are also available for students in this program:

Students may petition for the eligibility of courses outside this list after consultation with their advisor. Thesis
A student in the proposed concentration may choose a thesis option to gain data science research experience. To complete this option, each student needs to complete 6 additional units through independent work and research with a faculty advisor, typically during the final two semesters of the program, bringing the total degree requirement to 36 units. To be eligible for the thesis option, a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the first 18 units of coursework satisfying the program requirements. It is the student's responsibility to find a thesis advisor who is willing to guide their research. During the student's last semester of studies, the student is required to defend their thesis through a presentation accompanied by a question-and-answer period. Students typically complete their thesis option in three or four semesters.
Admission Requirements
- To be eligible for this program, students must have already passed POLSCI 5094 Mathematical Modeling in Political Science, POLSCI 5690 Quantitative Political Methodology I, and POLSCI 5695 Quantitative Political Methodology II and earned a grade of A– or A in these courses. Although exceptions have been made in the grade requirements at the request of Political Science faculty, this decision is up to the Department of Statistics and Data Science.
- Students must obtain permission from the methodology field committee in the Department of Political Science.
- Students must formally apply to the Department of Statistics and Data Science Master of Arts program through the Office of Graduate Studies, Arts & Sciences, online portal.
