Experiential Learning: Beyond The Classroom

Co-Curricular Opportunities for Minors

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the AFAS curriculum. AFAS minors extend their education beyond the classroom through faculty-led research projects and labs, independent research, community-based internships, and serving as undergraduate teaching assistants. Students also engage in a wide range of department-sponsored programs, including keynote lectures, panel discussions, field trips, cultural events and performances, the Annual African Film Festival, and exhibitions that deepen their understanding of the Black experience globally. In addition, guest scholars, artists, and practitioners regularly visit AFAS courses, allowing students to engage directly with leading voices in the field. Together, these hands-on experiences foster intellectual growth, critical inquiry, and meaningful connections between academic study and the broader world.
