Economics Major, Financial Economics Specialization

  • Total Units Required: 40-42 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C– must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

Majors must do the following, in addition to completing the Economics Major: ​

  1. Complete one of the following: one 3-unit economics elective at the 3000 or 4000 level; FIN 3150 Capital Markets and Financial Management; either MATH 4560 Topics in Financial Mathematics or ESE 4270 Financial Mathematics; or one preapproved financial-economics elective from a study abroad program. (Preapproval for an elective from a study abroad program comes from the study abroad advisor in the Department of Economics.)
  2. Majors will have completed five electives: four for the economics major, plus one additional elective for the specialization. A minimum of three of these five courses must be drawn from the "Financial Economics Electives" above or be a preapproved financial-economics elective from a study abroad program.

Economics and Computer Science Major, Financial Economics Specialization

  • Total Units Required: 57 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C– must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

This major specialization is only available to students pursuing a BA or second major in Arts & Sciences. Majors must do the following, in addition to completing the Economics and Computer Science Major:

  1. Complete one additional elective drawn from the "List of Financial Economics Electives" above or complete one preapproved financial-economics elective from a study abroad program. (Preapproval for an elective from a study abroad program comes from the study abroad advisor in the Department of Economics.) 
  2. Majors will have completed four financial economics electives: three for the Economics & Computer Science major, plus one additional elective (e.g., from the list above) for the specialization. Both of the following conditions must be satisfied:
    • At least three of the four electives must be drawn from the preapproved list of Economics electives in the major.
    • ​​​At least two of the four electives must be drawn from the approved list of "Financial Economics Electives” above or be preapproved financial economics electives from a study abroad program.

Mathematics and Economics Major, Financial Economics Specialization

  • Total Units Required: 60 total units
  • Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with the letter grade option, and a grade of at least C– must be earned in each. (A grade of at least C is required in study abroad coursework.)

Students completing this major must do the following: 

  1. Complete the Required Courses for the Mathematics and Economics Major.
  2. Complete four economics electives; both of the following conditions must be satisfied:
    1. At least two of the four electives must be drawn from the list of "Financial Economics Electives" above.
    2. At least three of the four electives must be drawn from the approved list of economics electives for the Mathematics and Economics Major.
  3. Complete three mathematics electives drawn from the approved list of mathematics electives for the Mathematics and Economics Major.
  4. Complete MATH 4560 Topics in Financial Mathematics.
