MPH/Master of Social Work (MSW)

Students in the MPH/MSW program earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Bursky School of Public Health and a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the Brown School. This dual degree integrates public health, social justice, and policy to address complex relationships on local, state, national, and international scales.

The program of study requires the completion of 86 credit units, typically taken over the course of three years. Dual MPH/MSW students must choose an MSW concentration within the Brown School and must declare the MPH Generalist concentration within Burksy School of Public Health.

Note: To enter a dual degree program, an applicant must apply to each school separately and be admitted to both.

Required MSW Courses

Specific requirements for the MSW degree can be found on the Degree Requirements tab of the Master of Social Work page of this Bulletin. Students complete three 1-credit skill labs to meet the MSW requirement for Leadership & Management. These skill labs, Research Methods and 3 credits of Dual Practicum count toward both degrees. Students should work with their academic advisors to be sure they are meeting all requirements for both degrees.
